Teaching Plan

Curriculum

During my practicum, I followed the special education curriculum of Indonesia, specifically designed for Grade 6 students with intellectual disabilities. I ensured that my lessons aligned with the existing curriculum, continuing the topics that my cooperating teacher would have discussed. However, in music class, I had more flexibility, as it was considered an extracurricular/vocational subject. My approach to teaching music focused on helping students play instruments and complete songs, allowing them to engage in creative expression while developing their musical skills.

Teaching Plan Related to Specialization

As a special education teacher, I applied my knowledge of various neurodevelopmental disabilities and used my observational skills to assess each student's progress and cater to their needs. I quickly noticed that my students had varying levels of comprehension—some found the lessons too easy and became bored, while others struggled with abstract concepts, motor skills, and foundational literacy and numeracy (3Rs: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic). With this in mind, I designed my teaching plan to accommodate the diverse needs of my students, ensuring that I provided differentiated instruction to maximize their learning opportunities.

Others

One of the most meaningful aspects of my teaching experience was immersing myself in the language and culture. This became a crucial teaching element, as it allowed me to build stronger connections with my students, even though I did not fully understand or speak their language. I also introduced Filipino culture to my students and highlighted similarities between the Philippines and Indonesia. This not only sparked their curiosity but also deepened our understanding of each other, creating a stronger bond between teacher and students. The cultural exchange made the classroom environment more engaging and fostered a greater appreciation for diversity.
